What is Xfer Records Serum?
Xfer Records Serum is a wavetable synthesizer plug-in developed by Steve Duda, designed for macOS and Windows DAW environments. It combines a visual, workflow-oriented interface with a high-quality oscillator engine, making it the industry-standard software synthesizer for EDM, cinematic, and experimental music production. Compatible with Apple Silicon (M1–M4) and Intel-based Macs running macOS 10.13 or later.
Wavetable Synthesis Engine
- Dual wavetable oscillators — each reads through a table of single-cycle waveforms
- Real-time wavetable import, editing, and transformation (from audio, images, or formulas)
- Sub oscillator and noise oscillator for low-end reinforcement and texture
- Visual waveform display with position scrubbing during playback
Filter Section — Flanging, Phasing & Comb Filters
- All filter types from Xfer LFOTool plus exclusive additions
- Flanging and phasing modes that track musical note pitch
- Comb filter with musical resonance control
- Downsampling (signal processing) for lo-fi and bit-crush effects
- Dual filter routing: serial, parallel, or split by oscillator
Modulation — LFOs & Envelopes
- Drag-and-drop modulation: drag any LFO or envelope onto any knob to assign it
- Low-frequency oscillation (LFO) with custom shapes, tempo sync, and per-voice trigger modes
- 4 envelopes (ADSR) and 4 LFOs available per patch
- Macro controls for performance and automation mapping
Unison & Voice Stack
- Up to 16 unison voices per oscillator for massive stereo stacks
- Unison WT Pos — assigns unique wavetable position to each voice
- Unison Warp — per-voice independent waveform distortion
- Stack mode for octave layering on single-note input
System Requirements — macOS & VST Compatibility
- macOS 10.13 High Sierra or later — including macOS Monterey, Sonoma, and Tahoe
- Apple Silicon (M1, M2, M3, M4) — native ARM build
- Intel x86 64-bit — fully supported
- Available as VST, VST3, and AU — compatible with Ableton, FL Studio, Logic Pro, GarageBand
- Tested on MacBook, MacBook Pro, and MacBook Air
